Teens take on drink spiking

The e3 Civic High Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam is inventing a novel product that is discrete and compact to test for “date rape” drugs in beverages. Any type of beverage is susceptible to being spiked. The all-girls InvenTeam cites alarming statistics from the American Addiction Centers that 44% of men and 56% of women said in a survey that they have unknowingly had their drinks spiked. Half of these took place while the respondents were in college and 19% happened while in high school. As young women about to enter college, they were horrified, surprised, worried, and apprehensive about going to college. This product will help create a safer environment for youth in social settings that may include nightclubs but also parties and private homes.
